ImageCouncil of Europe activities at Sarajevo Film Festival

One of activities of the Council of Europe at Sarajevo Film Festival was the School for  Human Rights for Children. The participants of the School were the students of the upper grade of the elementary school.

ImageU sklopu porodičnog dana 16. Sarajevo Film Festivala 31. Jula, Vijeće Evrope je na Vilsonovom šetalištu predstavilo svoje materijale vezane za diječja prava. Uz zabavne poklone i slikovite materijale, Vijeće Evrope je prezentiralo najmlađima a i njihovim roditeljima koja su to osnovna prava djeteta.
 
ImageSerbian director Nicola Lezaic’s "Tilva Ros" won the Council of Europe sponsored award as the best feature movie of the 16th Sarajevo Film Festival. Nicola Lezaic received a heart-shaped award – the "Heart of Sarajevo"- and a cash prize of 25,000 Euros provided by the Council of Europe. The movie is set in Bor, Serbia. What used to be the biggest copper mine in Europe has become nothing more than a hole, witnessing daily protests by the miners against the privatisation of their workplace.

Event: Sarajevo Film Festival

Description: For the third consecutive year, the Heart of Sarajevo, the main award of the Sarajevo Film Festival, is sponsored by the Council of Europe. The Festival is one of the most prestigious in the European film festival circuit. Held for the first time in 1995 at the height of the siege of the Bosnian capital, it seeks to support and promote regional cinema and authors.

ImageCouncil of Europe uses film to promote freedom of expression

Date: 26-28 July, 14h

Location: Sarajevo Law University (Bosnia & Herzegovina)

Event: Mock trial of the European Court of Human Rights on freedom of expression

Description: The Sarajevo Film Festival sets the scene for law students from Bosnia & Herzegovina to debate over a controversial film. In a hypothetical scenario involving a ban imposed by national authorities on a film that is highly critical of Islam, participants take on different roles in a simulation of a case before the European Court of Human Rights. Cedomir Radnic, Bosnian Court Officer at the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights, will guide participants through the process, making sure that Council of Europe standards on freedom of expression are respected.

 Thorbjørn Jagland in Srebrenica - ''never again'' is not enough!

Image[12/07/2010 15:30:00] The Secretary General together with Mevlüt Çavusoglu, President of the Parliamentary Assembly, attended on 11 July the commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide. In his speech to those gathered for the ceremony, Thorbjørn Jagland said: ‪''It is not enough simply to say - Never again. This has often been said, but it has not prevented an act of genocide in Europe, committed barely 50 years after the end of World War II''. (more ...)

Council of Europe strengthens professional training on the European Convention on Human Rights

Date: 29 June 2010

Place: Strasbourg (France)

Description: Aimed at strengthening professional training on the European Convention on Human Rights, the European Programme for Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals (the “so-called” HELP II programme) will be launched in the presence of representatives from 12 beneficiary countries (Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, “the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”, Russian Federation and Ukraine).

Eurimages Co-production Development Award

5th Summer University of the Council of Europe on the theme "The crisis of leadership"

Strasbourg, 28.06.2010 – Some 600 students of the schools of political studies of 16 European countries are participating in the fifth Summer University for Democracy, which began today in Strasbourg and which is devoted to "The crisis of leadership".

The Summer University is the annual flagship event of the Council of Europe’s schools of political studies, which aim to train the next generation of political, economic, social and cultural leaders in transition countries. It has now become a key rendezvous for young leaders working in the New Europe's public sector, an opportunity to hold debates, exchange ideas and attempt to answer the questions of today.

Youth Summit

When you are young, birthdays are about growing up and looking forward. When you have got a few years behind you, they are an opportunity to look back and assess what you have done over the years. The 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of London which set up the Council of Europe in 1949 is an opportunity to do both.
